In June 2026, a federal judge ordered the Interior Department to restore the removed materials and halt Secretary’s Order 3431 — but the First Circuit Court of Appeals stayed that order in July while the government’s appeal proceeds, so the case remains undecided. As of today, 443 park history entries with documented artifacts across the country have been flagged for review, revised, or removed entirely. This includes interpretive materials, exhibit panels, films, publications, and waysides at parks from Gettysburg to Selma to Independence Hall.

Our national parks are America's classrooms. They preserve the stories of war, sacrifice, civil rights, and the complex journey that shaped our nation. Erasing or sanitizing this history does a disservice to every American who visits these sites seeking truth.

This fight is gaining momentum. On March 19, 2026, the National Parks Conservation Association and a broad coalition of historians, scientists, and advocates filed for a preliminary injunction in federal court to halt the censorship and restore removed materials. And 53 of your House colleagues, led by Rep. Jared Huffman, have already called on the Appropriations Committee to block funding for SO 3431's implementation. I am asking you to join them.

Utah Public Radio reports that Interior’s September disapproval of partner agreements cost Utah a dozen national park projects, including museum digitization at Zion. Nationwide, more than 130 projects worth $25.9 million were stopped, though the money was already secured. The cuts fit a wider pattern: leaked planning documents published Sept. 21 would abolish the Park Service’s seven regional directors and about 1,100 regional positions. One reversal: after weeks of local opposition, Major League Baseball dropped Grand Teton from its ballpark search.
