George B. Dorr and Charles W. Eliot led the private land conservation effort that made the park possible, with John D. Rockefeller Jr. later financing the construction of 45 miles of carriage roads. The park's diverse ecosystems mark the overlap of northern boreal and eastern deciduous forests, supporting over 1,100 plant species and serving as a critical stopover for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway.
