Cumberland Gap National Historical Park straddles the border of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee at a natural pass through the Appalachian Mountains that has served as a major migration corridor for thousands of years. Herds of bison and Native American peoples — including Cherokee and Shawnee — used the gap long before European settlement. In 1775, Daniel Boone led a party to widen the trail through the gap into what became the Wilderness Road, and by 1810 an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 settlers had passed through Cumberland Gap heading west. The park was authorized by Congress in 1940 and encompasses over 24,000 acres of forested mountain terrain.

Cumberland Gap NHP in TN is one of hundreds of National Park Service sites where interpretive content has been flagged under Secretary's Order 3431. This directive requires parks to review materials that could be considered negative about past or living Americans — a standard that threatens the factual historical record these sites were created to preserve.

Why this matters: Cumberland Gap NHP is one of 466+ National Park Service sites where historically accurate interpretive content has been flagged under Secretary's Order 3431. Over 300 million people visit national parks each year. For many — especially schoolchildren — these visits are their first and deepest encounter with American history.
